Understanding your projected population to 2022
Twenty-year population projections by age and sex can now be analysed for any Local Government Areas using our interactive software The PopuLater, which is delivered loaded with your area's projections compared with Australia's.
Until recently, local population projections have been difficult and expensive to get, yet they are so essential for planning. We’ve accessed a set of projections prepared by the ABS for every local council area (SLA) in Australia. They cover 2002 to 2022, with projections by 5-year age group.
The PopuLater is interactive Excel-based software that prepares an instant analysis of the projections for any area, with a menu of options so you can select particular topics, age groups, sexes or time periods. Different aspects of the projections can be explored. The PopuLater shows how the age groups change over time, in numbers and growth rates, as well as showing change relative to a comparison area and the differences between the sexes.

The interactive menu lets you change the aspect, age groups and gender being examined and customise charts.
The data
These projections were prepared by the ABS for the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, which has agreed to release the data to the public. The Public Practice developed special software to extract the data for any local area.
The projections were calculated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics from the medium scenario in Population Projections 2002-2101 (ABS cat. 3222.0). The preliminary estimated resident population at 30 June 2002 is projected using the cohort-component method where the effects of births, death and migration on each age-sex group are calculated, adjusted to estimated urban-city balances. The projections reflect the underlying assumptions detailed in the report SLA Population Projections 2002-2021. Read more.
The projections are not official projections by the ABS. Neither the ABS nor The Public Practice accept any liability for any damages arising from decisions or actions based on these population projections.
The Price
The PopuLater comes loaded with your chosen area's projections for just $300.
Additional 20-year age-sex projections for any Statistical Local Area are $79; Projections for larger (aggregated) areas are $159. You can load these into your Projector from its menu.
